"Less is more" was the theme in transforming this traditional ranch into a modern style home. Walls were moved around to change the layout of the existing space and space was added to the kitchen. Simple lines were created with new painted moldings, custom mantels and flat panel doors and cabinets. New modern furniture and modest accessories were added for the finishing touches. The exterior still fits well in this established neighborhood but the inside adds a modern edge.

What can you do with an average house that sits right in the middle of a one-of-a-kind lot with a perfect location? Well, you could choose to tear off the back half of it, add 1400 square feet, gut and remodel the entire interior, and add over 4000 square feet of outdoor entertaining area, including a pool and facility house.

That’s exactly what the homeowners decided to do in following a dream to create one of the finest Arts and Crafts inspired homes ever constructed in the mid west.

Nearly six months of careful thought, design, detail, engineering and layout were done prior to our construction team stepping foot onto the acreage that housed the original 2600 square foot home.

Over the first period of construction, the back half of the roof and rear walls were removed, and 1400 square feet was added, bringing the homes new total to over 4000 square feet of what would become some of the most intricate living space in today’s housing market.

Tall ceilings, custom doors and windows, granite countertops, unique cabinetry (all specially designed) and imported solid fir timber beams are only some of the fine features you can see in this arts and crafts home. The thought and detail put into each room of this remodel makes it truly one of a kind!

Three bedrooms, four bathrooms, family room, sunroom, study, exercise and hunting room, upstairs laundry, impressive trophy room and an extraordinary kitchen and great-room are all enclosed under one roof.

But if you’re impressed with the interior, take a gander at the back yard. Magee Construction coordinated over 30 subcontractors in the back yard alone to bring together this awesome outdoor living space.

An in-ground pool, outdoor kitchen, covered trellis, entry pergola, pool house, fire pit, hot tub, waterfall and over 500 square feet of deck were all incorporated into this massive outdoor entertaining area.

The 4000 square feet of outdoor living space was landscaped with hand picked boulders and rocks, some up to 36” tall. Decorative stamped and stained concrete patios, walkways, and countertops add character throughout, connecting all of the areas together as one.

Start to finish, Magee Construction Company completed the project in a short 9 month time period. The thought in planning and design, as well as the fine craftsmanship and hard work from each of Magee Construction’s very own team of specialized trades people and subcontractors, speaks for itself in each detail of this magnificent home.

This project was completed in many phases to allow the family to remain living in the home during construction. The small outdated kitchen was opened up into the living room. A cobbled together breeze way was expanded to provide a previously lacking entry and a spacious family room. A master bedroom and bath suite were added on one side and the other a three season room. The two additions were seamlessly connected with decks and a patio to create a private area to take advantage of a wooded lot in the middle of town.

The exterior of this home was dramatically changed during a whole house remodel. Outdated brick was removed and larger windows were installed. An octagon shaped porch was built to shelter the front door. The once dark, low-ceilinged family room was enlarged visually by adding a vaulted ceiling and removing walls to open it up to other parts of the home. What once was a bedroom is now a spacious new hickory kitchen with peninsula and large island. An old wood burning fireplace was removed from the corner of the family room and windows were added. A new gas fireplace was centered as the new focal point. Retractable doors can be pulled out to cover the TV when not in use.

The remodeling of this home occurred in stages. The kitchen, family and dining areas were completed a few years prior to the exterior, entry and living room remodel. During the second stage, a previously awkward entry area was replaced by a beautifully designed and lanscaped entrance that enhances both the homes exterior and interior. The columns and barrel vaulted entry ceiling that you see on the homes exterior are echoed in the hall as you step inside. Columns also flank the arched entrance to the formal living room. New windows were installed and exterior siding was replaced with natural stone.

These folks loved the neighborhood, but the house needed updating. Kitchen space was added as well as a sunroom that included a built in TV space above the fireplace. On the exterior, two covered stoops were built using antique brick. The drive and patio were replaced with poured concrete which was stamped in a cobblestone pattern and then stained.

1230 square feet of additional space was added to this home. The existing interior space was remodeled to include custom designed cabinets for the kitchen and all bathrooms. Natural stone counters were installed throughout the home. In-home office space with a unique windowed prow was added on the second level of the addition. The design of the added space retained the open airy feel of the original home.

This extensive one-year project began as a repair to work completed by a previous contractor. It evolved to include a new kitchen with painted cabinets and Corian counters, a finished basement and a custom designed fence. It also included a complete re-siding of the exterior and additional exterior window and door trim which complimented the original design of the home.

While the interior of this home needed no updating due to its original contemporary design, the exterior needed help. We installed new Pella windows and doors and added brick and stone to the complete perimeter of the home. The design of the brick and stone was carried over to the pool area.

Located in a beautiful, older area of town, the existing home lacked the size the owners required. Conway and Schulte Architects were able to provide a design that doubled the square footage of the house without compromising the design of the original home. Wood floors, cherry cabinets, natural stone counters and custom stair rails and balusters are all part of this project. The existing quarter-sawn trim was retained and new trim was custom milled in our shop using quarter-sawn oak salvaged from an Odd Fellows hall that was scheduled for demolition.

This muddled home was on a wide boulevard and needed some serious help to become an asset to the neighborhood rather than a distraction. Many years of cobbling were corrected a plan was created which added a spacious master bedroom, expanded kitchen and a family room. The old plaster was removed from the complete interior of the home walls were straightened and new drywall applied.

The 1.5 year project set this home apart from any on the golf course, which can be viewed from the expansive new patio and sunroom space. The lower level includes a home theater that leaves the owners and their family no reason to stand in a line at the theater. A walnut stair that includes a one-of-a-kind copper and steel railing system, leads to the finished lower level kitchen, bar, family room and home theater.

This country home needed some exterior repair as well as needing more space for the growing family. A turret was included in the added space and provides a unique area off of the upstairs library. The new stoops and railings maintain the existing design.

A complete remodel that facilitated a view of the lake from the owners’ home office as well as doubling the size of the home, allowed this family to make this house their year-round residence. A large deck was added. The garage space was tripled and access to the new garage was accomplished by filling in a ravine. The upper level of the garage can now be accessed from one direction while the lower level can be reached from the opposite direction. Cedar siding, maple cabinets, commercial appliances and lake-view added dormers complete this project.
